New Procore Research Reveals Barriers and Benefits of Leveraging Data to Improve Construction Quality and Compliance

This research release is the second in a survey by ACA Research of 153 construction leaders in Australia that investigated the state of data-driven quality and compliance in the industry. The results show that although all of the companies surveyed use data to some extent, there is often a lack of communication and collaboration between the different stakeholders in the process, which means that the potential benefits may not be fully realized. achieved.

Software usage increases, while paper persists

As the construction industry continues its accelerated adoption of digital solutions, three-quarters of all respondents (76%) use some form of software to capture data across their business. However, some respondents continue to rely on paper records.

  • One in five respondents manage quality and compliance on paper (21%), although 56% agree that paper-based quality assurance (QA) processes are inconvenient and increase the risk of rework.

Parts of the industry are still lagging behind in digital transformation, and inconsistent digital data capture across processes and company sizes could be the result of a variety of factors.

The most common challenge is that different teams often manage their affairs separately within an organization, which means there is no central and up-to-date repository for documentation across the enterprise.

Survey respondents identified subdivision data collection as the biggest barrier to accessing data, with 38% saying compliance data is collected or managed by different parts of the business.

Benefits of data analysis for quality assurance processes

There are obvious advantages to using data analysis for QA processes. Large organizations stand out for their recognition of the drawbacks of paper-based QA processes (66%) and the value of data analytics when it comes to achieving desired QA outcomes (77% ).

Construction leaders almost universally recognize the potential for more consistent and standardized data to benefit their business, but larger companies are more aware of the magnitude of these potential benefits. Overall, the appreciation of the data has increased since 2020, with 38% of respondents saying capturing and analyzing data improves efficiency and productivity a lot, compared to 34% last year.

All respondents agree that operating cost savings are a clear benefit in using data to guide decision-making, and many believe that additional savings can be achieved through more efficient use of data. data. More than a quarter of companies (27%) believe they could reduce their operating costs by a fifth or more if they made full use of all available data to make decisions and achieve better results.
