Do you dream of a career change? TheThe first application period for the DREAM-Math project is now open.

Through a collaborative effort between the College of Education, Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics, Tuskegee University, and other partners across the state, STEM-educated professionals now have a unique opportunity to change careers.

The Developing, Recruiting and Empowering Alabama Mathematics Teachers, or DREAM-Math, project addresses the critical shortage of math teachers in Alabama while streamlining the process and removing barriers for people who want to become math teachers.

The program is for those who have never been a teacher but have a STEM degree that includes at least 12-15 hours of math at or above Calculus I level.

“I know firsthand that there are many paths that can lead someone to become a math teacher,” said Marilyn E. Strutchens, Emily R. and Gerald S. Leischuck Endowed Professor and Mildred Cheshire Fraley Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Education in the College of Education. . “The DREAM-Math Project opens the door to meaningful, rewarding and exciting careers for career changers and those who may not have considered a career in teaching before.”

Funded by a $3.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Noyce Scholars Program, DREAM-Math will provide participants with a scholarship of more than $35,000 to complete a four-semester master’s-level teacher certification program full time. It will also help new teachers launch their careers, including an annual stipend of $10,000 when they complete four years of teaching at a school in need.
