The Sekondi-Takoradi Forestry District of the Forestry Commission will plant about 400,000 seedlings of four tree species, fruit trees and ornamental plants this year under the Green Ghana project.

The district has already started preparing the site and depositing the polypots, while some young people from the reforestation project have also been contracted to produce 100,000 seedlings against a contract to purchase 300,000 seedlings.

Mrs. Gertrude Agbavitor, Deputy District Manager, told the Ghana News Agency that the project will span over 256 hectares of land for on-reserve and off-reserve areas in the district.

Outside the reserve, 80 sites including schools, churches and community centers in the various assembly forest districts including STMA, Mpohor, Wassa East and Ahanta would benefit from the project.

She said a total of 33,280 on-reserve seedlings would be planted in Krobo, kakabo and Essaman, among others, while 67,200 off-reserve seedlings would be planted in selected institutions, homes and schools.

According to her, species to be planted include Cedrela, Mahogany, Emire and Ofram.

The deputy district manager said the district, on advice from the meteorological services, would begin the exercise in May.
