Community partners team up to promote literacy and the lifelong love of reading. This year marks the 11th anniversary of Project Literacy, a collaborative initiative that includes school programs, author visits and book signings for the public. Wells Fargo, Midland County Public Library Foundation, The Midland Reporter-Telegram, Midland ISD, Basin PBS and Midland County Public Libraries are working together for this year’s events.

Featured author Raul the Third will be the special guest of a celebration of the Literacy Project on Monday at this year’s host school, the Washington STEM Academy. Representatives from Wells Fargo and MISD will also speak at the celebration, according to a press release. Raul the Third and author / illustrator Evan Turk will be presenting in-person author talks at the Bowie Fine Arts Academy auditorium Monday through Wednesday. Young adult author Jonathan Auxie will present two virtual programs on October 7 for fifth grade students at MISD.

The Literacy Project kicked off this week when volunteer readers began arriving on Midland campuses to read the bilingual children’s book “¡Vamos! Let’s go to the market ”by Raúl III. Each grade one student will receive a copy of the book to keep, and each grade one teacher will receive a class copy.

Second year classes will receive “¡Vamos! Let’s Go to the Market ”with“ The People’s Painter: How Ben Shahn Fought for Justice with Art ”by Cynthia Levinson and illustrated by Evan Turk. Grade 5 classes will receive a copy of Jonathan Auxier’s “Balayage”. MISD primary school libraries will receive copies of all three books.

The Literacy project includes opportunities for the community to meet the authors. Raul the Third will be at the downtown library for an art talk from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday. Raul the Third and Evan Turk will participate in signing sessions at the Centennial Library after their school visits. The signing sessions are free and open to the public. The books will be available for purchase on-site from Barnes and Noble Booksellers.
