Developer pays $ 10 million for several Becker College properties


WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) – A developer who paid $ 10 million for 27 properties in Worcester that once belonged to the now-closed Becker College has said he plans to return some buildings to single-family homes, affordable apartments in market prices and student accommodation.

Russ Haims of Hampton Properties LLC closed the sale on Friday, the Telegram & Gazette reported. The purchase includes 24 buildings and three parking lots.

He said he wanted to protect the neighborhood, known as Elm Park.

“It’s still such an attractive neighborhood, it doesn’t need to be rebuilt – it needs to be repositioned,” Haims said.

The city has already purchased some properties from Becker College. Leicester has agreed to pay $ 20 million for Becker’s campus in that city.

The college announced its closure last March due to financial strains exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. He held his last graduation ceremony in May.

The Haims company already owns several properties in the region.

“I was afraid that the school would sell different plots to people who did not have the same allegiance to the community, who did not recognize the historical attributes of these properties, and I saw people taking shortcuts,” Haims said. “I’ve seen how a few poorly managed properties can affect a neighborhood.
