Developer offers apartments on former site of Chinese restaurant Shelton

SHELTON — A local developer is planning an apartment building for the Old Bridgeport Avenue property where its former owners proposed to open a speakeasy named Hush.

James Blakeman of Brookview Apartments, LLC., is seeking a major alteration to the planned development district on the property – listed at 309 Old Bridgeport Ave. – to allow the construction of a building with 30 apartments and on-site parking.

“After seeing the proposal with the easy talk, I thought moving to a sister building made sense,” Blakeman said. “I’m sure the people of this area will be happy.”


The application has been submitted to the Planning and Zoning Commission, which plans to hold a public hearing on the proposal in the coming weeks.

The building will correspond to Brookview Apartments, the structure already in place at 305 Old Bridgeport Ave. Blakeman called his latest plans phase two, and the new building, as currently proposed, would be a carbon copy of that building, which was completed two years ago. from.

“There’s a huge demand for apartments right now in the city,” Blakeman said, adding that once apartments open in one of his buildings, they immediately fill up.

Blakeman, a lifelong Shelton resident, has been involved in many construction projects in the area. In addition to the already completed Brookview Apartments, Blakeman has also completed the Vista Apartments I on Howe Avenue and is nearing completion of the neighboring sister project, Vista Apartments II.

Blakeman said he has had success with apartment complexes, with a turnover rate of less than 10%. He said the apartment lifestyle has become popular due to the desire for amenities, such as a full gym, security systems, and no overhead or maintenance responsibilities.

According to plans, all of the apartments in the proposed Brookview Apartments will be one bedroom, half with home offices.

The new construction would replace the two-storey structure and paving currently on the site.

Currently, the site is accessible from Sunwood Drive off Old Bridgeport Avenue. Plans indicate that a new entrance to the proposed off-street parking area will be created to be accessible from Sunwood Drive.

The site, former home of the Hunan Pan restaurant, was the subject of a contentious application to the Planning and Zoning Commission. The commission rejected the former owners’ plan to open a speakeasy, a decision the owners appealed. The appeal was dismissed by a judge.
