The University of Houston enters the NCAA Tournament as the top five seeds in a packed South Region that includes three of the top six teams in the nation: Arizona, Villanova and Tennessee.

Still, before anyone starts writing off the Cougars, you might want to check out the College Basketball Power Index. The BPI, as it is more commonly known, measures teams on a number of factors which include not only win-loss record and schedule strength, but also pace of play, the distance a team had to go s It was a road game, the altitude the games are played at, and so on and so forth.

More importantly, the BPI has been around for 15 years and in 13 of those 15 years the eventual National Champion was ranked in the top three by the BPI.

Guess where UH is ranked. No. 2. It makes you wonder how in the world the Cougars, who open against UAB at 8:20 p.m. Friday, are only a 5 seed.

The top three BPI teams are Gonzaga, Houston and Arizona. Based on their ranking, the BPI gives teams a percentage chance of winning the title. As the No. 1 team, Gonzaga has a 23.8% chance of cutting the nets in New Orleans. HU is at 10.3% and Arizona at 7.4%

That’s great news for Cougars fans, but the bad news is that only five teams in BPI history have ever had a better chance of winning the title than this year’s Gonzaga team and four of those teams. actually won the crown. The outlier was the 2015 Kentucky team that had Karl-Anthony Towns, Devin Booker and Houston’s Andrew and Aaron Harrison, but got upset in the Final Four before Duke won it all.

And, remember that loaded region of the South? Four of BPI’s top seven teams – Houston (2), Arizona (3), Tennessee (5), Villanova (7) are all in the same region.
